TYPES OF
KICK-BOXING
CHINESE KICK-BOXING
Originally from the Shaolin Monastery and called simply Shaolin Boxing. Boxing in the Orient meant to strike with all body limbs. Therefore, punching with the fists, kicking with feet, and striking with open hands or elbows were considered to be boxing. Shaolin Boxing is the oldest form and is our original martial art now called Shorinji Karate (Shaolin Temple Chinese Hand and Foot Boxing). Mr. Skornia trained in Shaolin Boxing in China.
THAI BOXING
Comes from Thailand and is known as Muay Thai or Thai Boxing. The Thai version uses very brutal full contact. It has full contact punching, elbow strikes, and many kicks, especially low shin round kicks to the knee joints. Proponents often get permanent injuries. Mr. Skornia trained with a national Thai champion in Thailand. Classes available in semi-private lessons.
AMERICAN KICK-BOXING
It is called “kick” boxing because most Americans think of boxing as only using punches. It originally came out of contact karate by adding American boxing techniques. It usually does not include elbows because of the danger of permanent injury. The kicks come from Karate, Tae-Kwondo and Thai shin kicks. There is a Japanese version, which is very similar with elbow strikes. This is done as a sport with full contact similar to professional boxing but with kicks to the body and head also.
AEROBIC DANCE KICK-BOXING
This is strictly for exercise. It utilizes punches and kicks based on karate and kick boxing martial arts but without the detail to correct techniques and self-defense applications. Often done with music, as in aerobic dancing. Techniques are done in the air and on bags. Not meant for real use or self-defense.
THAI BO POWER KICK-BOXING -
The original “Thaibo” Kick-Boxing – Taught here since Master Skornia came back from training in Thailand, 1968.
Using real and authentic techniques for the best aerobic and cardio kick-boxing workout. Power Kick-Boxing gleans from our original Chinese boxing (using front and side bo stances) passed down from Thailand (Thai boxing) and then down to the present, adding American boxing to karate kicking. It teaches the best moves for great power blows and is an exciting aerobic workout. In addition, yoga stretching, hand focus mitts plus heavy bagwork (where available) and positive mental attitude to punches, strikes and kicks will give you a great toning workout. Our special high tech aerobic floor protects your knees, ankles, and feet from injury. Lots of fun. Ladies like this one, too. Light contact sparring with safety gear available. (Caution: Doctors warn: Never risk permanent damage by doing kick-boxing on a wood floor or carpet over cement).
CARDIO KARATES.D. (With Self-Defense)
This is a great cardiovascular health-improving workout with emphasis on power and muscle toning. This is traditional karate technique taught with not only aerobic benefit, but with practical self-defense. The Thaibo kicks are used in this training also, but are stronger with more self-defense power. Our Cardio Karate form of kick-boxing i.e., hand & foot punching and kicking goes much more deeply into the real self-defense plus using joint locks, take-downs &“get-away” releasing techniques from Jujitsu & Aikido (Aikijujitsu) which don’t take a lot of strength. It also teaches stress reduction & gives you the best, most dynamic body-mind exercise.
